Private lessons are arranged directly between the parents and the private teacher. Lessons are usually once a week for 30 minutes. Each private teacher sets his own fee and studio policies. In the Sheboygan area, most teachers charge between $15-$25 per lesson.
There are many advantages to taking private lessons. Private lessons offer one on one instruction for 30 minutes opposed to small group lessons for 20 minutes (in 5th grade) or 3-4 times a quarter (in middle school). I encourage students to start taking lessons at the end of 5th grade. By then the student and parent will be able to gauge the student's level of interest in music.
Whenever possible, it is preferable to find a teacher who specializes on your instrument. Band teachers and orchestra teachers are "generalists." We know a fair amount about each instrument, but we all have a primary instrument upon which we have a greater in-depth knowledge.
This is a list of private teachers in our area. If you know of someone else who teaches and is accepting students, please let me know of them.
